I learned a lot about philosophy when I was in Japan, so it’s weird to me this current thing where influencers try to pump out the westernized version. They always get it wrong. Figure I might as well tell about the real versions.
My personal vision of Wabi-Sabi is comparable—and in many cases identical—to our own physical scars. They are there, representing what happened. When I look at them, they remind me how I should act.
Yeah, scars and flaws aren’t a thing you should leave behind. In fact, I think trying to do that results in mental illness. You gotta accept it and learn to live with it. Then, things change.
The first part this post reminds me of the speech Brad Pitt does at the end of Killing Then Softly, when he tells his contract that "This is America. This isn't a country. It's a business."
Someone will find a way to package and sell a simple principle for life into something you can use for posturing.
Martial arts teaches you this loop with each blow that lands. It also teaches with each muscle you pull when you screw up the execution. Failure is always informative with the right attitude, and its monetization has been one of the unfortunate results of the internet.
