A Signal Only You Can Hear Is Still A Signal
From the archive. This issue went out June 12, 2026 and is kept as it was sent. Anything it says about prices or dates was true then — for what things cost today, see the pass or the store.
You’re Already Infected – $5 – a short book about information as a weapon — The memetic war is not a metaphor. Short, ugly, useful argument for why the signal matters even when nobody is receiving it, and what happens when the wrong signals are the only ones running.
7 Deadly Sins of Newsletter Mastery – the mistakes everyone keeps making — If you’re broadcasting into the void and wondering why nothing is growing, start here. Specific, honest about what kills newsletters before they find their audience. (Affiliate link, the building takes a cut.)
The Signal Is the Point
The listener count was one. That was probably me. I stopped caring.
The radio station runs whether anyone is listening or not.
This used to bother me. I’d check the listener count and find one, and I’d know it was probably me, checking. The station plays original music and the occasional dead air I haven’t programmed out yet, running twenty-four hours into whatever void will take it.
What changed: I stopped thinking about it as a broadcast and started thinking about it as a signal.
The history of independent radio is the history of people transmitting from sheds and attics and vans parked outside city limits. What made those stations matter wasn’t audience size. It was the fact that the signal existed. A flag planted in the frequency. Something saying: this music, this voice, this frequency. Find it and you belong to something.
The streaming platforms render music into content. Content is the word we use when something used to be art but has been processed into a unit of attention, weighed, priced, and queued. My station doesn’t operate that way. The music on GZS plays because I put it there. Some of it I made. All of it I chose.
Seven people listening to something I built feels different from seven hundred people scrolling past it.
A signal that belongs to you cannot be demonetized.
The station is at nicheof.one/radio/. It runs all day. ~ J.D.
