A Hole Cut in the Fence

A toll booth in front of everything worth knowing. This is me refusing to run one.

Inked illustration: a hole cut in the fence, the gate left open.
// the gate's already open

There's a toll booth in front of damn near everything worth knowing, and somebody's standing in it with their hand out.

You want to learn how to write a book, build a site, run a small thing of your own without a boss. Fine. That'll be two grand for the course. Or a monthly fee. Or your email and your attention and your soul, billed in tiny increments forever. The booth has a hundred faces. The publisher who decides your manuscript isn't a fit. The algorithm that buries you unless you pay to boost. The guru selling a forty-dollar PDF of stuff he learned for free, dressed up in a webinar and a countdown timer.

That's the gate. The people running it are the gatekeepers. And the answer to why most of this stuff is free is short.

Because fuck the gatekeepers, that's why.

Now let me make that mean something.

Most of what I know got kept from me too. I came up the long way. Veteran, broke, figuring out how to make words pay while the rent clock ran. Every time I went looking for the real method, the actual nuts and bolts, I hit a paywall or a pitch or some smiling operator promising to unlock my potential for the low low price of everything I had. The knowledge was never rare. It was just fenced. They were selling me back access to a thing I already owned, which is my own capacity to learn and build and make a living with my hands and my head.

So I took the fence down. That's all free is. A hole cut in the fence.

Free routes around the toll booth. You don't pay to get in here. You don't trade your email for a checklist that turns out to be a sales letter. You read the thing, you take what's useful, you go build. If it helps, good. If it doesn't, you're out nothing but the time, and time spent reading something honest is rarely time wasted.

There are a few things I charge for. The deep stuff. The do-it-with-you work, where I'm in the trenches next to you instead of waving from the shore. And even then, here's the part that matters: you own your people. I don't rent you an audience and yank it back when you stop paying. The readers are yours. The list is yours. I'm not building a pen to keep you in. I'm building a door you can walk out of any time, which is the only kind of door worth a damn.

People hear "free" and assume it's bait. The taste before the hook. I get it. The whole creator-economy machine trained you to expect that, all that prosperity-gospel noise about funnels and scaling and turning your followers into a downline. Free isn't the worm on the line. Free is the point. It's a refusal. I'm not running a machine that converts your trust into money at the highest extraction rate the market will bear. I'm just a guy who got tired of the booth.

I'm not building an empire. I'm building something small and mine, on purpose, broke on purpose, pointed at a house and not a yacht. Enough is real. Rich is a mirage, a thing the gatekeepers sell you so you'll keep feeding the booth, keep paying the toll, keep believing the next course is the one that finally lets you through.

There's no through. There's just the work, and whether somebody fenced it off from you.

Mine's not fenced. The gate's already open. Walk in.
