What Passive Income Actually Costs

Passive income is real. Passive is not.

The phrase ‘passive income’ was coined by someone who wanted to sell you a course about passive income. What actually exists is income that doesn’t require your real-time presence. Worth building. But it isn’t passive. Nothing is.

A PDF I made two years ago still sells. That’s not passive. I wrote it. I built the page. I drove traffic to the page. I maintain the email list that surfaces the page. I update it when the information goes stale. The only passive part is that I’m not personally present at the moment of transaction.

What you’re building when you build a ‘passive’ income stream is optionality. The ability to not be in the room. To be sick, on the road, working on something else, and still have money come in. Worth having and I’m not diminishing it.

The maintenance cost compounds, though. Every product in the catalog is a surface that can break, go stale, or grow a support queue. Every automated email was written by hand before it ran on its own. Every funnel was constructed before it could function.

Do the work upfront. Collect later. That’s the deal.
