Build A Lead Magnet In An Afternoon
Give the Work Away First: How Free Builds the Trust That Sells — The reasoning under today’s drill: why your best one-page asset belongs on the free side of the opt-in, not locked behind a price. Read it before you decide what to give away.
Overlooked Puddles by Mike Searles — Step 1 is picking the one problem your buyers actually have. This is a field guide to the small, ignored niches nobody big bothers with. That’s exactly where the sharpest lead magnets come from. (Affiliate link, the building takes a cut.)
Build a Lead Magnet in an Afternoon
One page, one problem, one opt-in. Built before dinner.
By dinner you have one page that solves one real problem, gated behind an email box, pulling addresses while you sleep. No course. No funnel diagram. No week of design. Here’s the drill.
1 // Pick one problem your buyers already have
Not your whole audience. The people who buy or would buy. Pull your last 20 buyer emails, DMs, or support replies and hunt the question that keeps coming back. The magnet answers that one question and nothing else. Can’t name it in a sentence? You don’t know your buyer yet. Fix that first.
2 // Make a one-page checklist or template that solves it
Open a blank Google Doc. Title it for the result, not the topic: ‘The 9-Point Pre-Launch Checklist,’ never ‘About Launching.’ List the exact steps or fill-in fields, in order, in plain language. Keep it to one page. File, Download, PDF Document, and the asset exists. An hour, tops. Run longer and you’re padding to dodge the ship.
3 // Gate it behind an email opt-in
In your email tool, build a new form or landing page (MailerLite and Kit both run a free tier that covers your first 1,000 subscribers). Set it to deliver the PDF on confirm, as the download or as a link on the thank-you page. Headline the page with the result, one line on what’s inside, an email field, a button that reads Send Me the Checklist. Copy the live URL.
4 // Put it where the right people already are
A form nobody sees collects nothing. Drop the link in three places today: pinned to your profile, the P.S. of your next email, and the two or three group chats or communities where your buyers actually hang out. Lead with the result: ‘Made a one-pager that fixes [problem], free, grab it.’
The standard: 10 signups in the first week off your existing reach. Hit it, the magnet works, scale the channels. Miss it, the problem you picked isn’t worth an email to your readers. Back to step 1. Pick a sharper one.
Doc this afternoon. Form tonight. First signup before you wake up.
What problem are you putting on page one? Reply with the title you gave it. I’ll tell you if it’s a result or a topic. ~ J.D.
