Ten Minutes To Find Out If The List Grew
You Have to Work for the Yes Every Day — Permission isn’t a signature you cash forever. Every send either earns the yes again or spends it, and the unsubscribe click is that debt coming due. The piece behind today’s check.
7 Deadly Sins of Newsletter Mastery by Email FYI — A rundown of the mistakes that quietly bleed a list, written by someone who’s audited more newsletters than either of us wants to count. Pairs clean with a Friday churn check. (Affiliate link, the building takes a cut.)
The Growth-and-Churn Check
Ten minutes on Friday to find out if the list actually grew, not just stayed active.
Opens lie. Clicks and replies tell the truth, but growth and churn are the two numbers that say whether the whole operation is pointed the right direction. Ten minutes before you log off, pull both, and stop guessing at whether this week worked.
1 // Pull net new subscribers and unsubscribes for the week
Two numbers, not one. New subs, unsubs, and both totals on their own before you net them out. Forty new against thirty-eight lost nets positive on paper and still means the list is barely holding ground.
2 // Write the one number that moved most
Pick whichever number swung hardest against your normal week, up or down. Not every metric, one number. That’s the only one worth a sentence tonight.
3 // Name the likely cause
One line. A send that landed wrong, a swap that brought in the wrong room, a real piece that actually traveled. If you don’t know, write unknown and go find out before next Friday. Don’t invent a reason to feel better about it.
4 // Decide the single thing you’ll change
One move for next week, not five. Fix whatever caused the bad swing, or do more of whatever caused the good one.
I check both numbers every Friday for exactly this reason. A list can gain bodies and lose momentum in the same week, and the only way to catch that is looking at both counts instead of just the one that flatters you.
What moved for you this week, up or down? Hit reply and tell me the number. ~ J.D.
