Turn A Paid Guide Into A Free Front Door

From the archive. This issue went out July 20, 2026 and is kept as it was sent. Anything it says about prices or dates was true then — for what things cost today, see the pass or the store.

The Method: the free front door we point cold traffic at — The Method is the free front door for our whole operation: one standalone page that teaches the core move and still points at everything we sell. It’s today’s drill, already built and running. Read it as your worked example, then go build your own.

The Minimalist Hustler, small digital assets built lean enough to give one away — The Minimalist Hustler builds tiny, single-purpose digital products and lean side hustles, the kind of small asset you can slice a free one-pager off of. Good fuel if today’s drill left you short on things worth giving away. (Affiliate link, the building takes a cut.)

Turn a Paid Guide Into a Lead Magnet

One paid guide, cut down to a free front door and gated. You build it today.

Today you pull one guide off your own store. You carve a standalone one-page cut out of it. Then you gate that page behind an email field, so a stranger has to trade an address to read it. Costs you an afternoon. What comes back is a list of people who already raised their hand for the exact kind of thing you sell next. Three moves below.

1 // Pull your best-selling small guide off the shelf

Open your store’s product list and sort by units sold. Skip the flagship, skip the bundles. You’re after the small guide sitting near the top, the $9 or $12 one that teaches a single skill start to finish and already moves on its own. If a buyer needs two of your other products just to use it, pass on it. Pick the one a stranger could buy at midnight and put to work by breakfast.

2 // Carve out a one-page version that walks alone

Open that guide and find the single move that delivers the win. Rewrite just that move into one page, somewhere around 500 to 700 words, tight enough that a reader can run it today with nothing else open. Strip every line that only lands if they already bought. Give away the working method clean and keep the deeper variations back for the paid version, then export the result as a plain PDF.

3 // Gate it and wire the two-email handoff

Stand up a simple page with one email field and a button that fires the PDF the instant they hit submit. Then set a single automated follow-up for about 24 hours later, carrying the full guide’s link and one honest line: here’s the deeper version if the free page earned it. Two emails total. Give them the win, then a day later tap them on the shoulder about the paid one.

Before it goes live, read the free page with the paid one shut in a drawer. If it only holds up while it’s leaning on what you sell, you built bait, and bait doesn’t get you the email. Fix that before you ship it.

THE TIP. When you cut the free one-pager, give away the entire win but shrink it to a single case: the one move that works cold, nothing else. Keep the edge cases and the deeper variations back for the paid version, so the buyer still has a reason to buy. That’s how ours are scoped on the guides shelf. The Guides shelf

DEAD AIR · RIVERGATE / 3:14 A.M.

Demolition crew logged the food court gone by Tuesday. Drove past at three. The shoe store on the east concourse had its lights on and its gate up. No shoes. No crew on site until six. I noted the time and kept driving.

Reply and tell me which guide you’re cutting down, the title and the price you’ve been charging for it. I’ll tell you straight if you picked the right damn one. ~ J.D.
